With summer  coming to an end,  you can still enjoy the late season flowers such as  Rudbekia, Asters and Sedums. The London parks, such as St James', still have great floral displays on show. It is also the time to give the lawn a good autumnal treatment with a feed deigned to strengthen the roots before winter and a good aeration and scarification before the weather turns colder. Start looking to be planting new bulbs for spring at the end of September, so get your plan in place before you go out and buy them, so you know where they are going to go and if you have plans to replant any flower beds, now is a good time to plan that as well, whilst the weather is mild. Herbaceous plants and shrubbery can go in and get themselves established before winter.

Now is the time to be putting in your summer bedding as there is no more risk of frost. If you are planting up your pots, remember to water them regularly and, if you’re planting plants such as petunias that are susceptible to slug damage, take the necessary precautions for their growth such as pet-friendly pellets and gravel. There’s nothing worse than spending several hours planting your pots only to find the next day the slugs have got at them and destroyed half the plants. If you’re not sure which plants are susceptible, ask your local garden centre and they’ll be able to tell you or drop us a line and we’ll get back to you with an answer.

Remember the Chelsea Flower Show starts this month and takes place from 22nd to 27th. If you don’t have a ticket, be sure to watch it on TV.
